The Winter Beach, Orihuela Costa announces sporting activities for Spring

ORIHUELA COSTA council have approved the return of “The Winter Beach” from Sunday 31st March. The popular program of beach activities will return to Cabo Roig's La Caleta beach for the third edition of the sponsored sporting activities, with additional events taking place at neighbouring Cala Capitán and Aguamarina beaches.

Luisa Boné, the Councillor of Beaches for Orihuela Town Hall, announced on Monday morning that the third iteration of The Winter Beach program would return at the end of the month, offering a total of 36 beach activities.

All activities are provided completely free of charge, and each has been carefully selected to ensure suitability for all ages and every level of sporting and physical competence.

The Winter Beach program was initially launched last year in response to local demand for water sports and social leisure activities throughout the year, at the selected location of Cabo Roig's La Caleta beach.

Councillor Boné stated, “In 2018 two editions of the program were held, each very well received, and now we hope this year to strengthen The Winter Beach and increase the number of participants.”

The council are keen to change the customary assumption that Orihuela's beaches are purely seasonal, and to demonstrate the range of possibilities that the beauty spots offer residents and visitors to the local area throughout the year.

The Town Hall hopes that offering beach sports outside the summer season when weather conditions allow it, will provide an example that generates a change of behaviour and thinking about areas on our doorstep that often go unused throughout the winter.

Cabo Roig's La Caleta beach has been selected as the ideal location once more, since according to Councillor Boné, the beach meets the stringent requirements for a family-friendly environment, with safe and clean Mediterranean waters, accessibility for all, the service of a beach bar year-round, and an extensive open beachfront comprised of golden sands.

Ms Boné stated “On this occasion, and for the month of June, we're taking The Winter Beach program to other beaches on the Orihuela Costa. Specifically, in Cala Capitán and Aguamarina participants can enjoy the sports of snorkelling and inshore diving.”

“We wanted to extend it to these beaches in the month of June given the great influx of swimmers and visitors on those dates, and to give the opportunity to savour the experience, and appreciate the diversity and natural magnificence of our indigenous marine life,” she said.

The Winter Beach program is designed for all ages, developed with the concept that any person, any couple, or any family, can simply head for the beach and participate in the activities of that day in a socially active and safe environment.

Ms Boné noted that safety was a commanding factor, and the events would be supported by a lifeguard service and a professionally crewed inshore safety boat for each date in the calendar.

Group aerobic activities such as yoga, body balance, Aquagym, and Zumba, will be organised alongside workshops and games for children that will aim to raise awareness and educate in the conservation, respect and protection of the environment.

Water sports on offer will include paddle boarding, canoeing, snorkelling, and diving for beginners – all provided free of charge.

Councillor Boné reported “The Winter Beach will start next Sunday 31st March with a Jumping Fitness Masterclass – the first one to take place on any Orihuela Costa beach. We will have trampolines to both have fun and exercise in a unique environment, but in a very different way than we have been doing so far.”

A total of 36 activities have been planned for the weekends covering dates from Sunday 31st March and culminating on Sunday 9th June 2019, with Councillor Boné encouraging everyone to participate, enjoy our wonderful beaches, and have a good time at The Winter Beach.

  1. We’re do you meet for the scuba diving on saturday the 25th May and do you need to bring anything with you. Also what is the age range .
    Thank you

    • Hi Stephen, the scuba diving courses take place on La Caleta beach in Cabo Roig. You´ll need swimwear and sun protection of course, but nothing out of the ordinary. I am not aware of any age range being set by the organisers, but I would imagine anyone deemed unfit for safety reasons will not be permitted to dive.

      • Hi thank you for your reply. Can you tell me what time to meet and where to meet, thank you for your help
